Some farms let you pick a standing tree and cut it yourself. Others sell trees already cut. Ask which the farm offers, and how recently the trees were cut.
Keeping a tree fresh
- Ask for a fresh cut across the base of the trunk before you put it in water.
- Keep the stand full. A fresh tree can drink a lot in the first days.
- Keep the tree away from heaters, vents, and open flames.
Questions worth asking
- Which species do you grow, and how old are these trees?
- Do you replant after harvest?
- Do you sell wreaths, greenery, or trees you grew yourself?
Many farms open after Thanksgiving and run until they sell out, and popular species go first. Check hours and payment options with the farm.
Bring a saw only if the farm says to. Many provide saws and help carry trees to your car.
